My Grandmother told me a story a few years ago about my Grandfather's death. He had health issues and hadn't been totally forthright in regards to seeing someone about them. Mary, my grandmother, found him leaned up against his pick-up truck one afternoon, he had died of a heart attack. Later that day she said Peter, my grandfather (and namesake), visited her as a ghost. This is a song about that day.
lyrics
You said you saw a doctor, it turns out that was a lie
Then I caught you smoking outside of the bar one night.
You thought you were living, but you were dying one breath at a time.
You thought I'd forgiven, but we didn't have that much time.
Saw you off that morning, just like any other time.
Then I got to thinking that maybe something's not right.
So, I called everyone I knew, said, "Have you seen my man?"
Then I hopped in my car to prove that I'm not insane.
You thought you were living, but you were dying one breath at a time.
You thought I'd forgiven, but we didn't have that much time.
I saw your ghost later on that day,
I'd never been so close to death -
I'm dying but I've got to stay.
You thought you were living, but you were dying one breath at a time.
You thought I'd forgiven, but we didn't have that much time.
